Be Where Your Feet Are

Are you living deeply or are you living widely? It is hard to do both and do both well.

It is normal to admit overwhelm at yet another “are you living life as well as you could be?” question. It is common knowledge that we are being bombarded left and right with “how to live life better.” What’s different about this question is it is asking you to consider if you’re doing too much with the finite energy you have to give each moment of each day. So if you have it in you to consider just one more “how to live life better” question, we’d recommend you consider this one.

The book Be Where Your Feet Are by Scott O’Neil is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to dive deeper into this concept. What does it actually mean and how do you live it out?

In summary, “The solution is not balance, the answer is to make ‘the most of each moment and ridding ourselves of the toxic habit of constantly looking forward to the next thing.’ Finding balance is ‘like aspiring to be in the middle.’ On the other hand, ‘being present, focused, committed, and hardworking at home and at work is the path to finding success and fulfillment.’” (Sourced from Leading Blog)

It’s never expected that anything we renew conviction toward will be executed perfectly, however this is part of the crutch we lean on when it comes to making lasting change in the way we live our lives. On one hand, being gentle with ourselves is important, on the other, if we never have stake in the risk of our life never changing from better to best, we tend to postpone and postpone; tomorrow.

Until we realize that the life we are meant to live is right beneath our feet, we will constantly be on a search for that next best thing. But the real problem with that is that we live in a shallow state, rather than in a deep, flourishing, fulfilling state.

The concept is inspiring, but the magic is always in the execution. Sit down and write a list of where your energy is in the present: people, places, things. What is pulling your energy that is preventing you from living deeply beneath the place where your feet are? Slowly weed those things out. It won’t wont happen overnight, but once it does it will make all the difference in your overall wellbeing.
